The Heart of Design by Peter Gould: How to align creative and entrepreneurial goals with Islamic values
We live in a world full of distraction, where million dollar brands and startups are competing for our attention so they can make that next sale. But now Peter Gould, designer, educator, and author of The Heart of Design is here to teach us it’s possible to ditch mainstream practices and align our creative and entrepreneurial goals with Islamic values.
Peter introduces readers to a Framework that embraces design for remembrance, not distraction. God-consciousness is emphasised throughout, helping readers identify how best to serve humanity with the talents and gifts entrusted to us.
Although titled The Heart of Design, this book isn’t just for designers. Students, graduates, founders, professionals, and creatives of all backgrounds can benefit from it.
Peter begins by sharing his career and spiritual journey, from freelancing and setting up his own design studio in Australia, to embracing Islam. He recalls a life-changing visit to a mosque in Australia which introduced him to Islamic design and architecture. What followed is a twenty year mission of seeking how to align modern-day entrepreneurial aspirations with the values, intentionality, and beauty of Islam.
As Peter shares his discoveries during this search, readers are guided through the Heart-Centered Design Framework, covering seven Spiritual Aspirations and seven Design Principles. Each Aspiration and Principle is followed by a set of reflective prompts allowing readers to reflect on and apply the Framework to a project, product, or design journey of their own. The section ends with the Heart-Centered Design Canvas, which allows you to visualise the Framework for your very own project.
The book ends with conversations with well-known leaders Peter approached for guidance over the years, including Yasmin Mogahed, Omar Suleiman, and Sami Yusuf to name a few.

This is a must-have book for Muslims (and non-Muslims) who no longer want to compromise faith in their professional and creative aspirations. I recommend all founders, professionals, students, and creatives grab a copy of The Heart of Design, especially if you want to build a new or adapt an existing product or project using the Heart-Centered Design Framework.
